Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose (born 23 January 1897), was one of the most famous Indian nationalist leaders who fought for India’s Independence from British rule. To this purpose, he founded the Indian National Army (INA), which included a women’s regiment too. In 1941, the British Government put Subhas under house arrest, that is, confined him in his own house. The following narrative describes the exciting and courageous escape of Subhas Bose from the clutches of the British to continue his struggle for India’s freedom.
নেতাজি সুভাষ চন্দ্র বসু (জন্ম: ২৩ জানুয়ারী ১৮৯৭) ছিলেন অন্যতম বিখ্যাত ভারতীয় জাতীয়তাবাদী নেতা, যিনি ব্রিটিশ শাসন থেকে ভারতবর্ষকে স্বাধীন করার জন্য লড়াই করেছিলেন। 🇮🇳 এই লক্ষ্যে তিনি “আজাদ হিন্দ ফৌজ” (ইন্ডিয়ান ন্যাশনাল আর্মি) প্রতিষ্ঠা করেছিলেন, যার মধ্যে একটি মহিলা বাহিনীও অন্তর্ভুক্ত ছিল 👩✈️। ১৯৪১ সালে ব্রিটিশ সরকার সুভাষকে গৃহবন্দি করে, অর্থাৎ তাকে তার নিজের বাড়িতে বন্দী করে রাখে 🏠। নিম্নলিখিত কাহিনীতে সুভাষ বোসকে ভারতের স্বাধীনতার সংগ্রাম অব্যাহত রাখতে ব্রিটিশদের খপ্পর থেকে যে উত্তেজনাপূর্ণ ও সাহসীকতার সঙ্গে পলায়ন করতে হয়েছিল তার বর্ণনা দেওয়া হয়েছে 🏃♂️💨।
Looking pale and thin, with a bushy half-grown beard, Subhas was reclining on his pillows when Sisir, his nephew, entered Subhas’s bedroom that December afternoon. Subhas made him sit to his right on the bed. Looking intensely at Sisir, he said, “Can you do some work for me?” Sisir 8.
ফ্যাকাশে এবং সরু, ঝোপঝাড়ের অর্ধেক বেড়েওঠা দাড়ি নিয়ে সুভাষ তার বালিশে হেলান দিয়ে শুয়ে ছিলেন 🛌, যখন তার ভাইপো শিশির, সেই ডিসেম্বরের বিকেলে সুভাষের শোবার ঘরে প্রবেশ করলেন 🚶♂️। সুভাষ তাকে বিছানায় ডানদিকে বসালেন। শিশিরের দিকে তীব্রভাবে তাকিয়ে তিনি বললেন, “তুমি কি আমার জন্য কিছু কাজ করতে পারবে?” শিশির মাথা নেড়ে সম্মতি জানাল 🤝।
The task, as it turned out, was to help plan and carry out Subhas’s escape from India. Sisir would have to drive his uncle, in the dead of the night, to a railway station far away from Calcutta.
কাজটি যেমন বোঝা গেল, সুভাষকে ভারত থেকে পালানোর পরিকল্পনা করা ও রূপায়ন করার ব্যাপারে সাহায্য করা 🗺️। শিশিরকে গভীর রাতে গাড়ি চালিয়ে তার কাকাকে নিয়ে যেতে হবে কলকাতা থেকে অনেক দূরের একটি রেলস্টেশনে 🚗🌌।
From his uncle’s residence at Elgin Road, Sisir walked back that night to his own house at 1, Woodburn Park in a state of wonder and subdued excitement.
এলগিন রোডে কাকার বাড়ি থেকে শিশির সেই রাতে হেঁটে ফিরে গিয়েছিলেন তার নিজের বাড়িতে ১, উডবার্ন পার্কে বিস্ময়কর অবস্থায় এবং চাপা উত্তেজনা নিয়ে 🏠🤔😮।
The police were keeping watch on Subhas’s house.
পুলিশ সুভাষের বাড়ির উপর নজর রাখছিল 👀🚔।
Though it was normal for a nephew to visit an ailing uncle, Subhas had an additional excuse for meeting his nephew. Sisir was good at operating the radio. He helped Subhas listen to foreign broadcasts.
যদিও ভাইপোর পক্ষে অসুস্থ মামার সাথে দেখা করা স্বাভাবিক ছিল, তবুও তার ভাইপোর সাথে দেখা করার জন্য সুভাষের অতিরিক্ত অজুহাত ছিল 📻। শিশির খুব ভাল রেডিও চালাতে পারতেন। তিনি সুভাষকে বিদেশী সম্প্রচার শুনতে সাহায্য করেছিলেন 🌍🔊।

Finally, they decided to drive out, in the most natural fashion, through the main gate. Sisir owned a German car called the Wanderer, which he and Subhas chose for their journey.
অবশেষে, তারা সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছিলেন যে তারা খুব স্বভাবিক ভাবে বাড়ীর সদর দরজা দিয়ে গাড়ি চালিয়ে বেরিয়ে যাবেন। শিশিরের ওয়ান্ডারার নামক একটি জার্মান গাড়ি ছিল, যেটিকে তিনি এবং সুভাষ তাদের ভ্রমণের জন্য বেছে নিয়েছিলেন।

Subhas had cabled Akbar Shah to meet him at Calcutta. Akbar Shah was a co-worker in the freedom struggle against British Raj. He operated in the north-western frontier provinces. He was to help Subhas escape.
সুভাষ আকবর শাহকে কলকাতায় দেখা করতে বলেছিলেন 📞। আকবর শাহ ছিলেন ব্রিটিশ শাসনের বিরুদ্ধে স্বাধীনতা সংগ্রামের সহযোদ্ধা 🤝। তিনি উত্তর-পশ্চিম সীমান্ত প্রদেশে কাজ করতেন 🗺️। সুভাষকে পালাতে সাহায্য করার দায়িত্ব ছিল তার 🏃♂️💨।
Akbar Shah came to Calcutta. He was introduced to Sisir. Together they went to a shop in Central Calcutta where they purchased baggy shalwars (trousers) and a black fez for Subhas’s disguise. Later, Sisir also purchased a suitcase, a bedroll, shirts, and pillows. Subhas was to carry these with him in the journey. Sisir then went to a printer’s shop. He ordered a set of calling cards which read: ‘Muhammad Ziauddin, Travelling Inspector, the Empire of India Life Insurance Co. Ltd.. This was the false identity with which Subhas was to travel.
আকবর শাহ কলকাতায় এলেন এবং শিশিরের সাথে পরিচিত হলেন 🤝। তারা একসাথে মধ্য কলকাতার একটি দোকানে গিয়ে সুভাষের ছদ্মবেশের জন্য ঢিলেঢালা পাজামা এবং একটি কালো ফেজ টুপি কিনলেন 🛍️। পরে, শিশির একটি স্যুটকেস, বিছানার চাদর, শার্ট এবং বালিশও কিনলেন 🧳🛏️👕। সুভাষ এগুলো তার যাত্রায় সঙ্গে নেবেন 🚗🛤️। এরপর শিশির একটি ছাপাখানায় গিয়ে কিছু ভিজিটিং কার্ড অর্ডার করলেন, যাতে লেখা ছিল: ‘মুহাম্মদ জিয়াউদ্দিন, ভ্রমণ পরিদর্শক, এম্পায়ার অফ ইন্ডিয়া লাইফ ইন্স্যুরেন্স কোং লিমিটেড’। এটি ছিল সুভাষের ভ্রমণের জন্য মিথ্যা পরিচয় 🕵️♂️📇।
On 16th January 1941, Sisir finished his dinner early and drove to Elgin road around 8.30 pm. He parked the Wanderer at the back of the house.
১৬ জানুয়ারি ১৯৪১, শিশির রাতের খাবার তাড়াতাড়ি শেষ করে প্রায় ৮:৩০ টায় এলগিন রোডে গাড়ি চালিয়ে গেলেন 🍽️🚗। তিনি বাড়ির পেছনে তার ওয়ান্ডারার গাড়িটি পার্ক করলেন 🏠🚙।
Sisir and Subhas had maintained total secrecy about the plan of escape. None of the family members knew anything except Subhas’s niece Ila and a male cousin, Dwijen. Subhas and Sisir waited until the rest of the Bose family had fallen asleep.
শিশির এবং সুভাষ পালানোর পরিকল্পনা সম্পূর্ণ গোপন রেখেছিলেন 🤫🔒। সুভাষের ভাইঝি ইলা এবং খুড়তুতো ভাই দ্বিজেন ছাড়া পরিবারের কেউ কিছু জানত না 👨👩👧👦। সুভাষ ও শিশির অপেক্ষা করছিলেন যতক্ষণ না বোস পরিবারের বাকিরা ঘুমিয়ে পড়ে 🛌😴।
Subhas had changed into his disguise as Muhammad Ziauddin. He was dressed in a long, brown coat, baggy shalwars and a black fez. He wore gold wire-rimmed spectacles.
সুভাষ মোহাম্মদ জিয়াউদ্দিনের ছদ্মবেশে রূপান্তরিত হয়েছিলেন 🕵️♂️। তিনি একটি লম্বা বাদামী কোট, ঢিলেঢালা পাজামা এবং একটি কালো ফেজ টুপি পরেছিলেন 👔🧥। তার চোখে ছিল সোনার তারের ফ্রেমের চশমা 👓✨।
It was 1.35 am. The night was moonlit.
রাত তখন ১টা ৩৫ মিনিট। আকাশ ছিল চাঁদের আলোয় ভরা 🌕🌙।

Subhas and Sisir hugged the inner wall of the long house-corridor and tiptoed down the back stairs to the car. Subhas sat in the back, Sisir drove the car. He started the engine and drove out from 38/2 Elgin Road as he had done on so many past occasions. At Subhas’s Elgin Road residence, the light glowed in his bedroom to give the impression that he was still there. As Calcutta slept, uncle and nephew crossed Howrah Bridge and went beyond the city’s precincts.
সুভাষ ও শিশির বাড়ির ভেতরে দীর্ঘ দালানের দেওয়াল আঁকড়ে ধরে পা টিপে টিপে পিছনের সিঁড়ি দিয়ে গাড়ির কাছে চলে গেলেন 🚶♂️🚶♂️। সুভাষ পিছনে বসেছিলেন, শিশির গাড়ি চালাচ্ছিলেন 🚗। তিনি ইঞ্জিনটি চালু করলেন এবং ৩৮/২ এলগিন রোড থেকে বেরিয়ে গেলেন, যেমনটি তিনি অতীতে অনেকবার করেছিলেন 🔑🚙। সুভাষের এলগিন রোডের বাসায়, তার শোবার ঘরে আলো তখনও জ্বলছিল এমন ধারণা দেয়বার জন্য যে তিনি সেখানে রয়েছেন 💡🏠। কলকাতা যখন ঘুমাচ্ছিল, কাকা এবং ভাইপো হাওড়া ব্রিজ পেরিয়ে শহরের সীমানা পেরিয়ে গেলেন 🌉🌌।
Subhas poured Sisir coffee from a thermos. They shared a few anxious moments together when the car engine faltered once. It started again and Sisir dashed at high speed through the dark night. At around 8.30 am, they arrived at Bararee, near Dhanbad. They put up at the house of Sisir’s brother, Ashok. Subhas kept his disguise on as Muhammad Ziauddin, and said he had come on insurance business, and was given a room to rest during the day. They met and talked in the evening and had an early dinner.
সুভাষ শিশিরকে একটি ফ্লাস্ক থেকে কফি ঢেলে দিলেন ☕️। তারা কয়েকটি উদ্বেগজনক মুহূর্ত একসাথে কাটালেন যখন গাড়ির ইঞ্জিন একবার কাজ করছিল না 🚗😟। এটি আবার শুরু হয়েছিল এবং শিশির অন্ধকার রাতের মধ্য দিয়ে দ্রুত গতিতে ছুটিয়েছিল 🌌💨। সকাল সাড়ে ৮ টার দিকে তারা ধানবাদের নিকটবর্তী বারারি পৌঁছালেন 🕣📍। তাঁরা শিশিরের ভাই অশোকের বাড়িতে থাকলেন 🏠। সুভাষ মুহাম্মদ জিয়াউদ্দিনের ছদ্মবেশ ধরে রেখেছিলেন এবং বলেছিলেন যে তিনি বীমা ব্যবসায় এসেছেন এবং দিনের বেলা তাকে বিশ্রামের জন্য একটি ঘর দেওয়া হয়েছিল 🛌💼। সন্ধ্যাবেলায় তারা সাক্ষাত করলেন এবং কথাবার্তা বললেন এবং তাড়াতাড়ি রাতের খাবার খেয়েছিলেন 🍽️🗣️।
Muhammad Ziauddin left alone for Gomoh station which was some distance away. He wanted to catch the Delhi-Kalka Mail from there.
মুহম্মদ জিয়াউদ্দিন কিছুটা দূরের গোমো স্টেশনের উদ্দেশ্যে একা রওনা হন 🚶♂️🚉। তিনি সেখান থেকে দিল্লি-কলকা মেল ধরতে চেয়েছিলেন 🚂🕒।
A little further from the house, Sisir picked him up in his Wanderer and drove towards the railway station. They reached Gomoh station in the moonlit night. A sleepy porter collected their luggage.
বাসা থেকে কিছুটা দূরে, শিশির তাঁকে তার ওয়ান্ডারারে তুলে নিয়ে রেলস্টেশনের দিকে এগিয়ে গেলেন 🚗🌙। জ্যোৎস্নালোকিত রাতে তারা গোমো স্টেশন পৌঁছেছিলেন 🌕🚉। একটি ঘুমন্ত কুলি তাদের ব্যাগপত্র সংগ্রহ করেছিল 💤🧳।
