Jane Hyatt Yolen (Born in 1939) is an American author and editor of folklore, fantasy, science fiction, and children’s books. She has written over 280 books, the best known of which are The Holocaust Novella and The Devil’s Arithmetic. The present text is an edited version of her popular short story of the same name.

There was once a lad who wanted to be a sailor but his mother would not let him go to the sea. “Child, what do you know of sailing?” she would say. “You’re a farmer’s son, you know the turn of the seasons and the smell of the soil but you do not know the sea.”
একসময় এক ছেলে ছিল যে নাবিক হতে চেয়েছিল, কিন্তু তার মা তাকে সমুদ্রে যেতে দিতে রাজি ছিলেন না। তিনি বলতেন, “বাছা, তুমি জলযাত্রা সম্পর্কে কতটুকু জানো? তুমি তো একজন কৃষকের ছেলে, ঋতু পরিবর্তন আর মাটির গন্ধ চেনো, কিন্তু সমুদ্রের রহস্য বোঝো না।” 🌿🚜🌊
Now the boy whose name was Jon, had always obeyed his mother. So he went about his farm work with a heavy heart but did not again mention the sea.
ছেলেটির নাম ছিল জন। সে সবসময় মায়ের কথা শুনত। তাই মন খারাপ হলেও সে চুপচাপ নিজের খামারের কাজ করে যেতে লাগল, কিন্তু সমুদ্রের প্রসঙ্গ আর তুলল না। 😔🌾🚶
One day, he had been walking behind the plough. He all but ran over a tiny green turtle on a clod of dirt. He picked the turtle up and set it on his head where he knew it would be safe. When he was done with ploughing, Jon plucked the turtle from his head. To his utter surprise he found that it had turned into a tiny green fairy man that stood upon his palm and bowed.
একদিন সে লাঙ্গলের পেছনে হাঁটছিল, হঠাৎ সে দেখতে পেল একটুকরো মাটির ঢেলার ওপর একটি ছোট সবুজ কচ্ছপ বসে আছে। সে কচ্ছপটিকে তুলে নিয়ে নিজের মাথায় রাখল, কারণ সেখানেই এটি নিরাপদ থাকবে। লাঙ্গলের কাজ শেষ হলে, সে কচ্ছপটিকে নামিয়ে আনল। কিন্তু তখনই অবাক হয়ে দেখল যে সেটি বদলে গেছে এক ক্ষুদ্র সবুজ পরীর মতো মানুষের রূপে, যে তার হাতের তালুর ওপর দাঁড়িয়ে নমস্কার করল। 🐢✨🧚
“I thank you for your kindness, tell me your heart’s desire and I’ll grant it to you for saving my life,” said the fairy. Jon bowed back but said nothing. Although his heart yearned to go out to the sea, he did not express his wish.

The green fairy man could read a heart easily so he said, “I see you wish to go sailing”. Jon’s face answered for him.

“Since you put me on your head like a hat to keep me safe, I shall give you a different kind of cap in return, the kind sailors most desire. A cap full of wind. But there’s one warning, no human hand will ever be able to take it off.”
“তুমি আমাকে মাথার ওপর রেখে নিরাপদ করেছ, তাই প্রতিদানে আমি তোমাকে এক বিশেষ টুপি দেব। এটি এমন এক টুপি যা সকল নাবিকের স্বপ্ন। এক টুপি যা বাতাসে পূর্ণ! তবে মনে রেখো, কোনো মানুষের হাত এটি খুলতে পারবে না।” 🎩💨⚠️
Then with a blink, the fairy man disappeared leaving a striped cap behind. Young Jon put the cap on his head and ran home to tell his mother.
পরীটি এক নিমেষে অদৃশ্য হয়ে গেল, রেখে গেল একটি ডোরাকাটা টুপি। খুশিতে জন সেটি মাথায় পরে দৌড়ে বাড়ি গেল, মাকে দেখানোর জন্য। 🎩🏃♂️💨
“No good will come of the wind cap,” she said. But the lad would have none of her cautions. The very next day, putting on the sailor’s cap, he ran off to the sea. On seeing a ship anchored near the shore, he requested the captain to take him along. Thus began his first ever sea voyage!
তার মা বললেন, “এই বাতাসের টুপি কোনো ভালো ফল বয়ে আনবে না।” কিন্তু জন কোনো সতর্কতাকে গুরুত্ব দিল না। পরদিনই সে নাবিকের টুপি পরে সমুদ্রের দিকে ছুটল। উপকূলে নোঙর করা একটি জাহাজ দেখে সে ক্যাপ্টেনের কাছে অনুরোধ করল, যেন তাকে জাহাজে তুলে নেয়। এভাবেই শুরু হলো তার প্রথম সমুদ্রযাত্রা! ⛵🌊🚀
Well, the wind cap worked as the fairy had said but that one condition prevailed! Now that was both bad and good. It was bad because Jon could neither take his cap off before his captain nor at bedtime. And it was good because neither could he lose the cap nor could it be stolen from him.
পরীর কথা সত্যি প্রমাণিত হলো, টুপিটি আসলেই বাতাস ডেকে আনতে পারত! তবে এতে সুবিধা যেমন ছিল, তেমনই অসুবিধাও ছিল। অসুবিধা ছিল এই যে, জন এটি খুলতে পারত না—না ক্যাপ্টেনের সামনে, না রাতে শোয়ার সময়। কিন্তু সুবিধা ছিল এটাও যে, টুপিটি হারানোর বা কেউ চুরি করে নেওয়ার কোনো ভয় ছিল না। 🎩🔐🌬️
Since it was wind that sailors called for, and wind that Jon could supply, he soon became very popular. When he twisted the cap, he could summon the east wind and the west wind. He could also turn it to call both the north as well as the south wind. The captain would therefore never part with his prized sailor and let him ashore.

For a year and a day, young Jon did not set foot on land. He saw nothing but the churning of the waves. Soon, there grew in his heart a strong desire to see the land.

“Oh, let me go ashore just for one day,” he begged the captain when they had sighted land. He promised he would return, but the captain was unmoved. However, Jon could not stop dreaming of the land.
🌊 “ওহ, আমাকে অন্তত একদিনের জন্য উপকূলে যেতে দাও,” জন ক্যাপ্টেনকে অনুরোধ করল, যখন তারা স্থলভূমি দেখতে পেল। সে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিল যে সে ফিরে আসবে, কিন্তু ক্যাপ্টেন একেবারেই রাজি হলেন না। তবুও, জনের মনে ভূমি দেখার আকাঙ্ক্ষা ক্রমেই বাড়তে লাগল।
A sudden squall rose, striking the ship without warning.

The wind had been whirling about the boat, tearing the sails and snapping the spars. “It’s his fault,” the sailors cried. They shouted in anger and fear and tried to rip the cap off his head.
🌀 বাতাস জাহাজের চারপাশে তীব্র গতিতে ঘুরছিল, পালের টুকরো টুকরো করে ফেলছিল এবং মাস্তুল ভেঙে দিচ্ছিল। “এটা সবই ওর দোষ!” নাবিকরা চিৎকার করে উঠল। তারা রাগ এবং ভয়ে জনের মাথা থেকে টুপিটি খুলে ফেলার চেষ্টা করল।
Well, they were unsuccessful, for it was a fairy cap. They pulled it and twisted it, and so the squall became a storm—the mightiest they had ever seen. The captain ordered his men to bring Jon before him. In anger, he grabbed him by the tail of his striped cap, twisted him thrice, and flung him out to the sea. But the winds called up by the cap spun the ship three times around.

As Jon went under the waves, the cap came off his head. Soon the storm stopped, and Jon swam ashore. The cap followed him. When he got to the land, Jon picked up the cap and ran home to his mother and farm.
🌊 জন যখন বিশাল ঢেউয়ের নিচে তলিয়ে যাচ্ছিল, তখন টুপিটি হঠাৎ করেই তার মাথা থেকে খুলে গেল। মুহূর্তের মধ্যে ঝড় থেমে গেল, আকাশ পরিষ্কার হয়ে গেল। ☀️ জন সাঁতরে উপকূলে চলে এল, আর টুপিটি তার পিছু নিল! 🏃♂️💨 তীরে পৌঁছে জন টুপিটি তুলে নিল, তারপর দৌড়ে মায়ের কাছে এবং নিজের খামারে ফিরে গেল।
Again in the winter, when the snow lay heavy on the fields, he began to dream of the sea. Jon went to the wardrobe, got out the fairy cap, and stared at it for a long moment. Tucking it in his shirt, he ran out to the field. He placed the wind cap under a stone where he knew the fairy man would find it. Then he left again for the seas.
❄️ আবার শীতকালে, যখন মাঠে ভারী তুষার পড়েছিল, তখন জনের মনে সমুদ্রের কথা জাগতে লাগল। 🌊 একদিন সে আলমারি খুলে টুপিটি বের করল, সেটার দিকে অনেকক্ষণ তাকিয়ে রইল। তারপর সেটিকে নিজের শার্টের ভেতরে গুঁজে দৌড়ে মাঠের দিকে গেল। 🏃♂️💨 সে বাতাসের টুপিটি একটি বড় পাথরের নিচে রেখে দিল, কারণ সে জানত যে, সবুজ পরী মানুষটি একদিন এটিকে খুঁজে পাবে। তারপর, সে আবার সমুদ্রযাত্রার জন্য বেরিয়ে পড়ল। 🚢
For the rest of his life, Jon spent half the year on a ship and half on the shore, till at last he owned his own boat and a hundred-acre farmland. From then on, he came to be known as Captain Turtle, for he was as much at home on the water as he was on the land.
